Since 1997, the Texas Choral Consort's unique Symposium format, combining the best possible quality music, education, choral/orchestral performance and social experience, has thrilled thousands of choral participants and listeners, making it one of Central Texas' most popular choral events. The Symposium Chorus is open to all singers, age 14 and above, with no auditions, and features a series of seminars, rehearsals and performances, all within a 3½ week period. Works performed by the Symposium include Bach's Christmas Oratorio in August 2005 (see review in "Past Performances" portion of this website), St. John Passion, and Magnificat, Handel's Messiah (complete), Haydn's The Creation, Nelsonmesse and Heiligmesse, Mozart's Requiem, C Minor Mass and Coronation Mass, and Vivaldi's Gloria. Maestro Peter Bay of the Austin Symphony will guest conduct the Fauré Requiem for the 2006 MidWinter Symposium and, during June 24 to July 4, 2006, the Symposium will make its overseas debut in Cardiff, Wales, performing Mozart's Requiem with the Llandaff Cathedral Choral Society and Welsh Sinfonia. |
The Texas Choral Consort offers auditioned choral opportunities for those experienced singers desiring to perform at an exemplary level a variety of a cappella and accompanied choral repertoire from various periods and styles. The brilliant inaugural concerts of TCC’s 50-voice ensemble (formerly known as Schola Cantorum of Austin) on December 7 and 8, 2001 featured Advent/Christmas selections of J. S. Bach, Randall Thompson, Andreas Hammerschmidt, and Ralph Vaughan Williams and, in the words of Austin American-Statesman critic Duncan Goodrich, “marked the debut of a choral organization well worth watching.” Since that time, the group has performed J.S. Bach's Mass in B minor in June 2002, A Majestic Christmas in December 2002 highlighted by John Rutter's Gloria, and May 2003’s The Peaceable Kingdom, featuring Randall Thompson’s incredible work of the same title as well as Barber’s Agnus Dei and Bach’s Jesu, meine Freude, a performance that was nominated for “Best Choral Performance” by the 2003 Austin Critic’s Table Awards. Experienced singers of all voice types are always welcome to audition for membership in this excellent ensemble; all solo assignments are filled from within the group. The Texas Choral Consort’s newest ensemble (formerly known as Camerata Vocale) made its debut at the November 15, 2003, New Horizons performance. Other performances include The Beauty of the Season, a lovely assortment of Christmas repertoire in December 2003, and Bach in the Saddle Again, a program of Bach sacred cantatas with chamber orchestra in May 2005. This upper-echelon chamber ensemble is comprised of about 20 auditioned and experienced singers capable of performing the highest quality chamber repertoire at an extraordinary level. It is intended that every voice in this choir be of solo quality. So, all solo assignments will be filled from within the group. |
